Centre’s note to radio stations against content glorifying alcohol, drugs

The decision was taken after the High Court of Punjab and Haryana took judicial note that such content affects children of impressionable age.

The Centre cautioned radio channels against playing songs or broadcasting content glorifying alcohol, drugs, weaponry, gangsters, and gun culture. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry issued an advisory pertaining to this on November 30.

“It has come to the notice of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting that some FM Radio Channels are playing songs/broadcasting content that glorify alcohol, drugs, weaponry, gangsters, gun culture, etc. Clause 11.1 of GOPA (10.1 of MGOPA) provides that the permission holder shall follow the same programme and advertisement codes as followed by the All India Radio as amended from time to time or any other applicable code, which the central government may prescribe from time to time. The broadcast of such songs/content is in violation of the AIR Programme Code,” the advisory stated.

The decision was taken after the High Court of Punjab and Haryana took judicial note that such content affects children of impressionable age. “In addition, it gives rise to the culture of gangsters,” the ministry said.

The ministry also pointed out that the Grant of Permission Agreement (GOPA) clause also provides that, in the event of the permission holder violating any terms and conditions of permission or any other provisions of the FM radio policy, the grantor will have the right to impose sanctions for suspension of the permission and prohibition of broadcast as prescribed.

In exercise of powers flowing from the GOPA, the ministry advised all FM Radio channels to strictly adhere to the prescribed terms and conditions and to not air any content that is in violation of the agreement. “Any violation shall entail penal action as deemed fit in accordance with the terms and condition laid down in the GOPA/MGOPA,” the advisory added.
