‘What are 80,000 cops doing?’ High Court takes Punjab govt to task for failing to arrest Amritpal Singh
Punjab and Haryana High Court termed it as an ‘intelligence failure’
The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday took the Punjab government to task for its failure to apprehend Amritpal Singh, leader of the Waris Punjab De outfit, who is on the run.
Terming it to be an “intelligence failure”, the High Court questioned Advocate General Vinod Ghai on why Amritpal has not been arrested when there were 80,000 police personnel in the state.
The Punjab Police had launched a massive manhunt four days ago to nab Amritpal. Most of his close aides and supporters have already been arrested.
This comes about a month after he and his supporters broke into Ajnala police station with weapons and managed to free one of his associates from custody. Six police officials were injured in the clash.
A habeas corpus petition had been filled by an Amritpal supporter, alleging that he had been illegally detained by the Punjab police, and demanding that he be produced before the court.
