Gurudwara Guru Ke Mehal -
The BIRTH PLACE of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur ji

As per the divine wish of Shri Guru Amar Das Ji, Shri Guru Ram Das Ji visited the sacred land of Amritsar to establish a new city. Upon his arrival, Guru Ji initially resided in a modest chapri (hut), which became the first dwelling of the emerging city. This settlement was initially called ‘Guru Ka Chakk’ (The Guru’s Place), later renamed ‘Ramdaspur,’ and ultimately came to be known as ‘Shri Amritsar.’
For 58 years, Guru Ram Das Ji, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, and Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji resided in Guru Ke Mehal (Guru’s Palace). During their time here, they undertook the construction and service of several significant Sikh religious sites, including Shri Santokhsar Sahib, Shri Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple), and Shri Akal Takht Sahib. Recognizing the importance of water for the community, Guru Sahib also commissioned the construction of a water well, which still exists today, providing drinking and bathing water to devotees.
Guru Ram Das Ji solemnized the marriage of Guru Arjan Dev Ji at Guru Ke Mehal. Later, Guru Arjan Dev Ji sent Mata Ganga Ji to Baba Budha Ji from this very place to seek blessings for a son. With the divine grace of Baba Budha Ji, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was born at Guru Ki Wadali in Chheharta, Shri Amritsar. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was also married in Guru Ke Mehal, further enhancing its spiritual and historical significance.
On the auspicious date of April 1, 1621 AD, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was born in Guru Ke Mehal, from the womb of Mata Nanki Ji, in the residence of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. This sacred place was also the birthplace of Baba Suraj Mal Ji, Anni Rai Ji, Baba Atal Rai Ji, and Bibi Veero Ji. The preparations for Bibi Veero Ji’s wedding were made in Guru Ke Mehal, but due to a sudden attack by the Mughal forces, the remaining marriage rituals had to be completed in Jhabbal.
The service of this holy site was initiated by Sant Baba Sewa Singh Ji Fort Anandgarh of Shri Anandpur Sahib. Presently, the management and seva (service) of Guru Ke Mehal are being carried out under the leadership of Sant Baba Labh Singh Ji Fort Anandgarh. Under his guidance, about 91 houses adjacent to the Gurdwara have been acquired and merged into the premises of Guru Ke Mehal. The construction of a new Langar Hall has been completed, and further beautification efforts are underway, including the application of a gold layer on the dome of the Gurdwara and additional infrastructural enhancements.
Currently, Sant Baba Labh Singh Ji is overseeing the construction of the Diwan Hall, Langar Hall, and grand entrance gates of Gurdwara Guru Ke Mehal. These efforts are being carried out through Kar Seva (selfless voluntary service) to ensure the preservation and enhancement of this sacred site.
Each year, the birth anniversary and martyrdom day of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji are commemorated with great devotion and reverence at Gurdwara Guru Ke Mehal, drawing thousands of devotees to partake in the celebrations and pay homage to the Guru’s legacy.
